As for wage rates, it varies from $20,000/year to $200,000/year, depending on the job. Doesn't matter if it's in Toronto/Montreal/Vancouver.

I have lived in Montreal for a few years even though I first landed in Toronto. Have visited Toronto also. It is certainly unkind and unfair to term Montreal as "racist" with one member even calling "racist dogs".

I came to Montreal speaking with little French and have learnt French along the way. Yes, it is true that it is hard to settle in Quebec if one does not know French. Yes, Quebec does have "interesting and sometimes controversial" politics. However, I have encountered many good, kind, helpful Quebecers. The francophones here are nice and friendly if you speak their language.
It's the same in other parts of Canada. One has to speak sufficient amount of English as well.

Let us not forget that there is a sizable anglophone and allophone population living in Quebec too before we make such judgement about the province.

interesting - does it mean 20K is minimum wage and all salaries are capped at 200K? ... probably one of the worst responses I#ve seen here...

@Rs85:
salaries are a significant portion higher in toronto compared to montreal. at the same time cost of living (especially housing) seems much cheaper in montreal as well. therefore, no big difference at the end of the month.
personally i find montreal is the more interesting city due to its European heritage. if you speak at least intermediate french with a strong willingness to improve, than go for it - unless you're in a very specific field such as banking. in this case you might be better off in toronto.

I totally agree. There is no difference in "English Canada" where do you live in terms wages and cost of living. The only difference is in cost of houses: Vancouver and Toronto have incredibly high cost of real property. Other than that- it does not matter where you live- only your job matters.

Stay out of Quebec unless you are French speaking to a working level. They also have the highest taxes. If you do not speak Frenh it is not only an annoying minus, it is actually serious as they have laws that require people to speak French, company have to work in French (your Windows in French etc) and they have language police to follow it up. Montreal is however a lively city and they are acting much like wanna-be-Europeans, so lots to see and do socially. The infrastructure is bad (even on Canadian standard), meaning roads, water, electricity etc. They have the highest taxes in Canada but on the other hand, cheaper public service and universities etc. If your children do not speak French, be prepared that they have to go to French speaking schools, the will not be allowed to English speaking schools, not even private ones.

I don't know Toronto, but I know Ottawa and I can recommend it, it is how ever a bit more of a sleeping town than Montreal of course. But clean and better in terms of infrastructure than most other Canadian places (roads are still crap though).

Winnipeg is very nice to start in for immigrants, as it is mega friendly and welcoming but extreemily cold in winter (true for most of Canada anyways).

thats the places I know.
good luck.

At the end of the day I found Toronto is better even if the cost of living is higher, at the end of the day you have more of cash in hand.

I will visit Toronto and see if the environment suits me and will be thinking to move there

thx

Vancouver
1. Toronto: The largest city in Canada and its financial center - the Canadian New-York. Relatively expensive unless you are willing to live in a cheaper neighborhood with a higher crime rate. Weather is pretty cold in winter with mild/hot summers. The area is not that scenic compare to BC and Alberta. Job market is bad, could be hard to get a specialist job. Other than that, it is a great place to live if you like the big city spirit.

2. Montreal: The second largest city in Canada - its French capital. Even though some people think that no one speaks English in Quebec, they do,but some people just do not want to. Crime rates are low, it's Canada for Christ's sake. As for me, I haven't seen any explicit racism there or may be I just don't care about it. The weather is pretty much the same as in Toronto - gets cold in winter, warm in summer. I would say that it is the city's architecture that is really beautiful.

3. Vancouver: The most beautiful city ever built. Its parks, mountains, lakes, architecture, everything makes you feel like on an everyday vacation. Friendly and laid back people, who would say "sorry" all the time. However, it is more expensive than both Toronto and Montreal as well as Vancouver's salaries are lower on average. Winter is mild and there is no snow in the city, but it rains for 3/4 of the whole year. There is no big city night life in here, so for some people Vancouver is extremely boring place.

4. Calgary: It's a good place to live if you drive a car. Gets real cold in winter with lots of snow. As for summers in Alberta, in general, they are pretty hot and sunny. The main thing why a lot of people are thinking to settle down in Alberta and especially Calgary or Edmonton is that you can make a better fortune there. Job market is expanding, salaries are relatively high as well as lower tax rates (GST 5%). Stunning nature scenes and a variety of outdoor activities would make it worth thinking to move in Alberta.
