Hi Karlshammar,

Does Rogers have plan for newcomers? I would like a Iphone 3GS but with the current price it is too high.

There's no specific plan for newcomers that I am aware of, but there might be. I don't know a lot about wireless as my specialty is cable products (I work for Rogers, by the way), but you could certainly call them and tell them what your needs are, and they'll help you find the best plan.

unfortunately Telus doesn't work for my phone.
Well, that's the thing though. By hanging onto your old phone, you limit your selection of providers. By getting a new phone, you can pick any provider.

I'm not a big fan of expensive phones, I will get the cheapest prepaid phone any day. Then it does not matter if it gets lost or damaged because it's easy to get a new one. A lot of people I know in Canada seem to get expensive phones on contract but this can also be a problem. If you damage or lose the phone, you are still stuck in the contract.

The news report on CBC about Rogers yesterday couldn't have helped that either. ;)

You mean this one: http://www.cbc.ca/canada/british-columbia/story/2009/12/14/bc-rogerstexting.html

I am sure most of the phone companies could be guilty of something like that. For me, Rogers just didn't seem to have any good plans. I went with Telus instead.

I also remember a case where a girl had gotten a contract from Fido. They gave her a phone number in the wrong area code meaning that all her calls were long distance. She tried to get this changed for months but calling them, being put on hold etc. eventually found out that Fido does not even offer service where she lives. They offered her to move to Rogers which is their mother company. She didn't want to move to Rogers, she just wanted out of the contract but they didn't want to do that. She ended up going on a TV show and they helped her deal with them.

Yeah that's the one.

Wow that is just crazy, the story you mention. My family in BC are with Fido, as you say, they are all much of a muchness really. It will be good for the market to be opened up to allow more competition really, although I see that the unions are trying to fight the introduction of Globalive inot Canada.

Yes, I seem to recall those unions being on strike half the time. They should be happy they have jobs in this economy. Strikes don't really work anyway. Everybody loses money and at the end you might just get a hair more than the measly raise you would have gotten anyway and will pay for the money you lost by striking in about 10 years time.

Shaw announced they were entering the cellphone market at their last shareholders meeting. They have already been granted the licensing. It will probably be 2 or 3 years before its launched

Rogers does offer discounts for newly landed immigrants. In the "Welcome Package" you get at the airport, there is a glossy magazine where you will find special ads just for immigrants. Look for it.
