My husband and I met in Korea while teaching English and we are considering going over again on a new year-long contract once he receives his PR. Does anyone know anything about the minimum residency requirement for PRs? Thanks in advance!

The only thing I've turned up is above... but is this outdated? Also, does it count against the PR if you are accompanying your spouse who is working overseas??

If a PR is accompanying a spouse who is working overseas, that time counts as time spent in Canada for his PR residency requirements.

Thanks so much for clarifying :)

But only if the spouse is working for a Canadian company. If not that doesn't count.

no, it still counts for maintaining a PR. It just won't count for citizenship if its not for a Canadian company/government.

No, you are wrong. This is what is says in http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/5445EA.asp:

OPTION 3. Accompanying a permanent resident outside Canada

You may count each day you accompanied a permanent resident outside Canada provided that:

•the person you accompanied is your spouse, common-law partner or parent (if you are a child under 22 years of age); and
•he or she was employed on a full-time basis by a Canadian business or in the public service of Canada or of a province during the period you accompanied him or her.

BTW, citizenship requires physical residence in Canada!

I understand that about citizenship - but we are only going for a one year contract (possibly). I just wanted to ensure that being away for one of three (or five, whatever it may be) will not affect the status of his PR.

I just found out that from your first post, you are Canadian. So according to the CIC link I provided above, your PR spouse only need to accompany you in order to maintain his PR status

Yes, steaky is correct.

You can count the days outside of Canada in certain circumstances as days that satisfy the residency requirement: You can count each day you accompanied a Canadian citizen outside Canada provided that the person you accompanied is your spouse or common-law partner (or other qualifying relation). If you are accompanying a permanent resident, there is an additional requirement that the PR you are accompanying must be employed by a Canadian company or be in public service for the country to count towards residency.

As far as documenting days for PR renewal, is it necessary to account for every little trip/vacation or just days where you actually took up residence outside the country? If it's every little trip I need to instigate some sort of tracking mechanism. I will never remember it all 5 years from now!

For your PR renewal, you need to list all days spent outside Canada so you better keep that information.

Thanks Leon, but CRAP!
Good thing I'm still in my first year of residency. At least right now I have a chance of resurrecting the info for the last 9 months.
