Minimum needed funds to show at Landing

Hi,

What is the minimum amount of funds one needs to carry for a single person (Skilled immigrant express entry) and show at landing? This CIC page (http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/funds.asp) says it is: $12300 CAD.

But this amount seems high, my understanding was an amount closer to $4000 CAD or something close to that.

Is my understanding wrong about that and does every one have to carry a minimum of $12300 at the time of landing?

I'm very confused about this.

Yes, your understanding is wrong. The amount indicated on the CIC website is the correct amount. I’m not sure where you got the idea that it’s about 4000CAD but it has been over 12000CAD for quite a while now.

You may not carry the cash on your person but be sure to prove that you have 12300CAD to support your self. The proof may be in the form of a Bank draft, travelers check, bank statement + letter confirming ur the a/c owner and the balance. If you’re asked for proof and you do not have it, you may find your self on the next flight out of Canada.

All the best.

I landed yesterday at YYZ, they only asked for passport + CoPR, which they make you sign on both pages and they keep the one page with your photo while you get to keep the other dopy without your photo. That’s it! They don’t even ask what items and values you are bring along wih you or if there are any goods coming later on.

True, some IOs don’t ask about funds, others ask but are not interested in seeing the proof. There are those that ask and want to see the proof. So, are you advising the OP to land without proof of the required funds?

As for items you’re bringing along, it’s advisable to take the initiative and inform them. They’ll then direct you to customs personnel who will processs your forms. That was my experience and the experience of some.

Congratulations on your landing.

Thanks!

I did bring my bank statements just in case, but I was just sharing my landing experience. I saw a couple of posts related to landing and they advised to fill in some form with the belongings and their values which I did. However, that wasn’t necessary in my case.

Just to clarify, I am going to carry CASH USD 12500 and another USD 5000 in traveler's cheque (Total USD 17500 which is equivalent to about CAD 21500) for a 3 member family. Carrying part of the money in traveler's cheque is OK with Canadian Immigration, right?

One more thing... Can u do some math? Would it fetch you more CAD if you purchased them in your country as opposed to purchasing them in Canada? If it gives u some extra dollars then better to land with CAD. If you get more CAD in Canada then I guess you can land with USD. Look at the exchange rates and do some math. Even it’s only $50, I’d take it. You need all the cash you can get your hands on.

In my PR application, if I give for our 4 member family size (me, my spouse & two daughters) we will take 35000 canadian dollar, should I have to take actually full 35000 canadian dollar with me in cash while landing in Canada? Please clarify me.

If you plan to bring or import belongings / goods later - it was a mistake not to inform the officer at landing and you may pay duty on them later.

but in this link http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/arrival.asp they are saying I should tell the CBSA officer if I take more than CAN $10000. How should I inform?

I did not have anything to import at a later date.
