Hello :
My PR 5 yr period ends in July 2013. I have been able to stay in Canada only for 5 months so far. Due to valid personal reasons (death of family member etc) I could not be there for the 2-yr period so far. I plan to go back to Canada in Jan 2013 which is 6 months before the 5-yr period ends. Right now I am in my native country.
1. What will I need to take with me to show at the POE?
2. What exactly should I tell the Immigration officer when he asks me the reason for the absence. I would be almost a year short of the required period.
3. I can take documents as evidence in any case. Get Doctor's certificates too. will that be enough?
4. Do I need an immigration attorney's consultation in this before I leave for Canada?
5. At the time of renewal in july 2013 what steps should I take other than staying put in the same province until I complete the 2 yrs..

Pls advice - for all the questions.
Thank you.

I need to leave Canada and I do not have a permanent resident card. Can I later re-enter Canada?

If you plan to return in a non-private vehicle, such as a plane or bus

If you plan to return to Canada in a commercial vehicle–such as a plane, train, boat or bus–you must apply for a travel document for permanent residents at a Canadian visa office abroad before returning to Canada. The travel document is only valid for one entry.

See a list of visa offices outside Canada.

If you return in a private vehicle, such as your own car

If you return to Canada in a private vehicle, such as your own car, you do not need a permanent resident card. You can use your Record of Landing (IMM 1000) or Confirmation of Permanent Residence (IMM 5292 or IMM 5688) instead. An officer will ask you questions to make sure you meet all of the residency requirements before allowing you to come back to Canada.

When you return to Canada, apply for a permanent resident card if you intend to travel outside Canada again.

What happens if my permanent resident card expires while I am outside Canada?

Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) does not mail permanent resident cards to addresses outside Canada.

If you want to return to Canada and you do not have a valid permanent resident card, you will need to get a permanent resident travel document. Send an Application for a Travel Document to a Canadian visa office abroad. Once you return to Canada, apply for a permanent resident card if you intend to travel outside Canada again

jazmin even if you employ the service of a lawyer you will not will.canada can not bend their rule.you need to pray so as not to lose your permanent residence.you did not even qualify to have one already five month out of five years.is better you moved to canada before the month end.best of luck...
