Military service

I did compulsory military servicein the 1980's. Does anyone know if I would have to get some kind of certificate to show my service dates? The form asks for things like commanding officer, but I certainly can't remember that kind of stuff from 20 years ago! Has anyone else had to go through this and what did you do?

Did you get reply for this or how did you manage? My father also In military 20 years ago and he didn’t remember commanding officers and his promotion dates of each rank. Can we add whatever we have remember and left rest of them with “Letter of Explanation “ that he was in service more than 20 years agao and didn’t remember some of them.
