My partner is making a visa application to Canada, however they had a peiod in a mental institution about 15 years ago where they spent 1 month there. Since then my partner visited the local doctor about Depression and Anxiety problems about 5-6 years ago. She subsequently received some group therapy but discontinued it and has since recovered, and has not seen her GP for mental health issues for the last 5 years.

Will these two mental health episodes affect my partners chance of attaining permanent visa status as part of the application?

And will my partners medical record be sought to confirm this and any other medical issues.

As I said earlier my partner has been perfectly well for the last 5 years.

This issue has been worrying me a little as I I'm nervous my partners history willl be used to from a negative outcome in the application process.

Advance thanks:)

Spouse/partners can only be refused for medical reasons if they have a communicable disease (e.g. TB). The situation you have described is not grounds for refusal. Stop worrying. :D

Don't worry! They can only be refused if they are at risk to other Canadians, or if they will be taking advantage of the health care system. So in your case, you won't have any problems :)

My girl is applying for a study permit for Canada. She has depression and is under medication. Besides medication, she is good and with excellent academic result. Just worry if her mental health challenge will affect her VISA application.

Any experience sharing will be great. Thank you so much.

I don’t think so but make sure when she gives medical exam to tell her physician about that. Mental stress is not a big issue

As long as she has proof that she is studying/working without long interruption and she is not a danger to herself or others she will be fine. Pretty standard these days to be taking an antidepressant. Would warn her that seeking mental healthcare can be very difficult in Canada and on campus. There is huge demand but not enough reasources. Would suggest maintaining existing therapist if she talks to someone regularly. Phone/skype/facetime therapy is usually an option.
