Hi guys and girls, I've got quite a complicated couple of questions that I hope someone can help me with.

I recently received COPR (this morning), my AOR being May 10th and I have carried out my medicals during February. I have had some exciting news in my career which lead me to now have to sort of postpone the process of establishing myself in Canada as much as possible.

I found the following in the PPR email:
  • Your Permanent Resident document(s) will expire one year after the date of your medical examinations or earlier if your passport or the passports of your spouse or dependant children (if applicable) expire on an earlier date.
Does this mean I need to land in Canada before February so my medicals are still valid?

My idea would be landing some time in August next year, process my landing and meanwhile come back to the UK where I currently reside and spend another 6 months there working. Does anyone know if this is possible or would there be any legal implications I should be aware of?

I guess the root of my question is how long can I wait to "process the landing" and can I legally leave the country and work in the uk for 6-12 months after I have done this?

Many thanks in advance!

Luciano.

Yes - this means that your visa will most likely be valid until February and you will be required to land by this date. You can always return to the UK afterwards. If your visa is valid until Feb - landing in August will obviously be too late - your visa will no longer be valid.

Thank you for the reply Scylla, I thought as much. Would you also know if it's OK to live and work outside Canada and maximum amount of time spent outside Canada?

Thanks.

You need to spend 2 years out of 5 in Canada on a rolling basis - so you can delay up to 3 years (though not advisable as you couldn't then leave for holidays, family events, etc) and stay in Canada permanently. You need to soft land first before leaving again.

Just look at taking a long weekend trip from the UK to Canada using an airline such as Air Transat given winter fares are usually pretty good, complete your landing and if time get your SIN sorted . The latter can be done at least at Toronto Pearson airport Mon/Friday I believe else you would need to go to a Service Canada office so consider even having a whole Friday in the weekend.

If you have a Canadian address for your PR card and someone who can forward it then fine, else you will need to apply for a PRTD next year a couple months before your planned return in order to board a plane. Once back in Canada you can apply for a PR card then.

As far as continuing to work in the UK you can do that as previous poster implied for near 3 years before returning although in doing that would mean not able to leave Canada for 2 years to meet the residency obligation. You wont become tax resident in Canada until you take up residence on a more permanent basis.
