Master --> PhD, do I need to reapply a new study permit?

Hi

I am now a master student and will graduate in April 2022. My study permit will expire in December 2023. Recently I got a Ph.D. offer, which begins in September 2022. My question is, do I need a new study permit since my program will change?

Nope changing if you are already a student in Canada does not require a new however if it’s going to expire you need extension but not a new one.

There's this other post where thaovy99 says that the master's study permit is only for the master's, and that you'd need a new study permit for a PhD.

Also, if I understand correctly, when you apply for a study permit extension, you're not applying for an extension of your visa (should you need one; probably applies to eTA as well). If your visa expires with your original study permit (which I understand is often the case), this means you cannot re-enter Canada if you leave, even if you have a valid study permit extension. In this case, you would need to apply for a visa extension as well. Wouldn't this imply that it's better to just apply for a new study permit, since if approved, they give you both the study permit and visa?

Also, does anyone know if there's any difference in your status in the eyes of Canada's government if you applied for one or more study permit extensions, or if you get a brand new study permit?
