Hi,

Below is my profile:

BTech: Electronics & Communication Engineering from Delhi College of Engineering, University of Delhi (year 2001-2005)

BTech Percentage: 68%

Work Experience: 10 years of rich experience with Intel in VLSI/Electronics/Semiconductor field

IELTS Score: 7 overall (with 6.5+ in all sections)

I request you to please suggest about my chances of getting MaSc/MEng admit in Concordia, McMaster, Alberta, University of Toronto or some other good University in Canada and subsequently study VISA considering my 10 years of academic break (although I was working in related area in which I did my engineering, i.e. Microelectronics)

Thanks in advance

P.S. I have completed my B.Tech. in year 2005 in Electronics & Communications and since last 10 years I have been working with Intel (One of the best electronics/VLSI/Semiconductor MNC in world) in related areas of Microelectronics.

@talktovinay I am planning masters 20 plus years after my bachelors. So gap isn't a factor on Canada/US. Good Luck

Please check your PM and reply back.

I have been told by many consultants that education gap of 10+ years even if one have relevant experience will create issues in MaSc/Meng admit thus need more inputs from forum members.

Thanks in advance

if u have relevant experience gap wont matter dont trust ur consultants blindly. Consultants want u to go to PG diploma/college as they get money from colleges and not universities.

Vinay you are dealing with a wrong consultant. This gap/age etc is no barrier at all. What matters is your vision, meeting expected criteria and your ability to articulate clearly in SOP. Do everything yourself it's straitforward and simple.

your profile is exceptional for any of the colleges listed. Presuming your interests are towards a PR visa, its wiser to go to the big three cities. Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver. You'll not just get easily accepted here but have good opprtunities for internships, part time work while studying and, of course landing a job on graduation and networking.

My Preference order would be

University of Toronto
University of British Columbia (Vancouver is the best city to live in canada, perfect weather)
McGill
Alberta Edmonton

Between MSc and MEng.. it has to be your choice. If your interests is research and specialising in a niche field MSc is the best. MEng generally goes with a coop/internships gives you the opportunity to work in real time work environment and do your own project. Whilst in MSc you will be graded based on your contribution to a professor's research.

All the best!

Waterloo should be on this list. Waterloo and the University of Toronto have the highest reputations when it comes to engineering degrees.

Thanks for all the replies. I have few more queries:

1. Should I apply to MaSc & MEng separately in any university (let say Concordia) OR I should only apply to MaSc and my application will automatically be considered for MEng if it got rejected for MaSc.

2. In Indian context, while applying for Masters, what is the meaning of "transcripts of all post-secondary institutions attended"? Do I need to send 10th class transcripts as well or 10th class transcript is not needed while applying for Maters?

3. When is the best time to start writing to Professors to explore scholarship opportunities while targeting Sep'2016.

4. With 10 years of Work Experience, Should I provide LOR from my professional supervisors or academic professors (Last, I interacted with my profs 10 years back)

5. Can someone help me with sample SoP. My email-id is meetme.gupta@gmail.com

Thanks in advance,
Regards
Vinay

why you want to apply for masters? You can directly apply for PR (POINT BASED)!
Hire a good consultant and directly apply for PR,you have got got experience, give IELTS test of general category and you are ready to go!

Hi Gaurav
As far as I know, without job offer, its almost impossible to get PR & once PR application gets rejected, they may deny study VISA as well so I feel it's better to apply for MaSc/MEng.
I request all again to please answer my queries

You can apply only for one course MSc or MEng. You cannot apply for both courses in the same department. Your SOP will be different for both courses. For MSc you should highlight your future interests in research. MEng has to talk about the skills you are currently lacking and wish to improve in your career. This is the differentiating factor.

However lot of universities convert MSc to MEng if they find your profile suiting the other one respectively. I know a few people who have posted in this forum where they applied for MEng and got accepted for MSc. You can try mailing the university admissions committee. Always feel free to email universities with any silly questions. They will diligently answer them.

Think of the SOP first and then decide on whether MS or MEng.

Transcripts are only for your bachelors degree, no need for high school and 12th

Write to professors ASAP! thats the best approach, cause they generally take least 3~4 months to reply. Some times they never reply its a draw of luck.

The standard LOR acceptance for universities is 3 ad 2. Some ask for 2, some 3. In either cases you can take a maximum of 1 LOR from employer the rest has to be from a professors/academician.

The most important factor for SOP is avoiding Plagiarism! Canadian universities specially the top univs, do a strict scrutiny of the documents you submit. If they find identical LORs/SOPs in their database, there is a high chance of rejecting your application. So work on these docs true to yourself with the best of your abilities. Don't try to copy/paste or use SOPs you'll find in a google search.
