Since my now husband was not able to get approval for a TRV prior to us being married in India, our original plan of civil ceremony in Canada and religious ceremony in India turned into having ot register the marriage in India. So I have certified copies (by notary of High Court in Jammu Kashmir) of the legal marriage documents as per Hindu Marriage Act in India. Its about 7 pages long, had about 3000 signatures all over it, and pretty much spells out the Hindu Marriage act and we both had to sign every page. It also includes our photos attached, and has stamps from both J&K high court, notary, advocate and also the registrar. It's stamed saying "valid for foreign countries and embassies" as well. And all the legal people who signed it, their registry numbers are also below their name on the stamps.
I am used to Canada documents and I think the marriage certificate here is much smaller... this is more like a 7 page document than a 'certificate' though I also have a certified true copy of the marriage certificate issued by the Gurdwara (Sikh temple) as well.
Will these suffice?? Obviously if they wouldn't let him come here on a TRV, we had to register the marriage in India... so hopefully India legal paperwork is ok.
Also, for supporting documents we have a newspaper article I was interviewd in last year (I became first sikh woman in Canada to tie turban in royal canadian navy in uniform and was interviewed for Times India, a National newspaper in print, and I mentioned in the article I was marrying a Singh from Srinagar, Kashmir) Also the same interview was just published in the Sikh Review magazine which is internationally distributed... so I also have a copy of that. The wedding was announced in the local newspaper the day after as one of the NGO he volunteers with congratulated us and put it in the newspaper. So we also have that clipping as well. Plus photos, my previous India Visas from trips there, etc. Should we need anything more?
Also of note on the application to sponsor I noticed the question of has my family met him, and had to answer no. As the reason we wanted him to come here on TRV first was because my Mother's health is bad and she could not travel to India. So I explained that he was rejected a TRV on first try and that the second one we never received an answer... so my Mother was not able to meet him in person. I explained her medical condition and that the only way she can meet him is when he comes to Canada. And since he was rejected TRV for 'purpose of visit' they obviously could not meet prior. So hopefully they will see it was their own doing... we DID try to have them meet. And nobody else in my family can afford to travel to India... or take the time off to do it. So I went there by myself for the marriage.
Even though we registered it in India, we still plan to do a civil ceremony here too as well... just so my family has 'something'
