Hello,

I am a Canadian resident, my boyfriend is from the UK. He will try to get a Working Holiday Visa for 2014 for 2 years.

My question is; will we be able to get married then and will he be able to work legally after his 2 years visa since we are married ?

Many thanks for your answers.

Yes - you can get married.

It's not clear what you mean by "resident". Do you mean that you are a Canadian permanent resident or citizen?

If so, then marrying you will not on its own allow your boyfriend to work after his 2 year visa has expired. You will have to sponsor him for PR.

Thank you for your answer.

Sorry-bad english here, I'm actually a citizen of Canada... (bloody French Canadian) !

I know that a UK citizen that gets married to a Canadian needs to be sponsored for 2 years before he is allowed to work.

If we get married on the beginning of his 2 year Working Holiday Visa, can I sponsor him while he is on this specific visa ? Therefore he would be allowed to work during that 2 years sponsor period ?

Many thanks,

I'm not sure what you mean by "needs to be sponsored for 2 years before he is allowed to work". If you sponsor him inland, then he will qualify for an open work permit once your application has first stage approval - which takes around 11 months. If you sponsor him outland, then he will be able to legally work in Canada once he is a PR. I believe outland applications through the London office are taking around 10 months right now for straight-forward applications (you should read through the posts in the Family Class section of the forum to verify).

He can continue working as long as his working holiday visa is valid. The fact that you have sponsored him will not impact this visa.
