Hi,
A year ago I submitted an investigation regarding a marriage of convince in regards to my husband. Throughout the entire marriage I was manipulated & suffered abuse in many ways. The abuse started when he landed in Canada, and we "separated" after 3 months of him being in Canada. By "separated" I mean he refused to stay with me the entire time he was with me and always had some lame excuse as to why he wouldn't call/ see me. Anyways after the 3 months I filed for a marriage of conveniance after being told about a medical condition that he lied about, and then lied again about being healthy; basically he hid it from the government and myself. My question is, what happens after a marriage of convenience is filed. I know he was under investigation because he threatened to ruin my life when he found out he was being investigated. There's many reasons as to why it was a marriage of convenience and I have tons of proof and witnesses. It's been a year and I haven't heard a thing, I was told these things take time but I don't want to suffer if he goes into any type of assistance programs, which hold me liable. Basically I'm terrified that Id owe the government money. Anyone know of any next steps, or someone else go through this and knows what happens next?
Thank you

Better you see a lawyer, your case is complex, don't forget you did sign the undertaking, if he does get any kind of assistance then you're reliable. You do take a risk when you are sponsoring someone just like I'm taking one sponsoring my partner, who knows what will happen when she'll get to Canada.

After the marriage of convenience is filed, it can take quite some time (many months) for IRCC to decide if there is sufficient evidence to prove there was a marriage of convenience and then longer to then go through the process of removing that individual from Canada. Typically there is little to no information provided back to the individual who logged the complaint since what happens to the person they are investigating is viewed as private / confidential. It's unfortunately very hard to say what has happened in your case. It's possible IRCC has investigated and determined there isn't sufficient evidence to pursue the case (this will depend on factors such as what kind of evidence you submitted and how long you were married). Or also possible they are working to remove your husband from Canada. If you have any further evidence to submit, I would certainly do that.

If he does go on social assistance at all between the time he landed and the time he leaves, you would unfortunately be financially responsible.

Hiring a lawyer may be a good way to understand more about what is happening. Good luck.
