Hi, I am a PR of Canada who is going to sponsor his spouse in India. Now, we are going to get a registered marriage done after the traditional ceremony.

As per Mumbai Marriage registration office, they only give out one original certificate.

When filing the application forms, Do I have to send in the original marriage certificate or will a photocopy do? The marriage certificate will be in English and hence no translation is needed.

The guide available on CIC website does not clearly demarcate and say whether we should send in the original or photocopy. They do specify that the the original of the PCC is needed but when it comes to marriage certificate, they say in the beginning of the guide 'submit photocopies unless instructed otherwise' and when it comes to the sponsored person documents checklist, they just say 'submit marriage certificate'.

Well, it sounds as if you answered your own question there ...

They do specify that the the original of the PCC is needed but when it comes to marriage certificate, they say in the beginning of the guide 'submit photocopies unless instructed otherwise' and when it comes to the sponsored person documents checklist, they just say 'submit marriage certificate'.

Hope that helps. I know I did an INLAND application and instructions also said the same. I sent a photocopy of all things, except my PCC and it was fine.

Please, always send photocopies of your documents for immigration unless otherwise or specifically requested by CIC.

Thanks,

POLICAP

Both outland India Specific Sponsorship and inland Sponsorship only require the application forms and police report to be originals. All other documents can be photocopies. When you do make photocopies, make sure you photocopy both sides of the original documents if anything is shown on both side of document.

Hi All,

Thank you for your responses.

But I want to seek some more clarification:

In the 'India specific guide', it says 'Submit photocopies of all document unless specifically instructed otherwise' and when it comes the point of establishing proof of the relationship, all it simply says is:

If sponsored person is married, submit
Marriage certificate

Now in a previous section, when they wanted the photocopy of the passport, they specifically say

Photocopies of the first and last page of passport

When they want the PCC, they specifically say

Police Clearance Certificate. Original only.

Why is it they are not being explicit when it comes to marriage certificate? Why are they not stating 'Photocopy of Marriage certificate' or 'original of Marriage certificate'

In the 'Manila specific guide' (I am not from Manila and neither is my spouse), they specifically ask for the Original of the Marriage certificate.

I would sincerely appreciate if you can provide me your comments.

Send a photocopy only. Manila is a special, and unusual, case.
Do NOT ever send originals unless specifically requested, as you may not get them back.

CIC Only request for original documents whenever they suspected non-gameness or forgery of the such document(s).

Hence do not send your original document as CIC will not return them.

Only applicants from Pakistan must provide originals of everything (all documentsn including marriage certificate) when applying outland.

Eastern europe/middle east/central asia must provide notorized copies, not photocopies.

Everyone else just show photocopies of documents.

Yah Manila was originals of almost everything, I sure hope we can get copies of this stuff back after.

Thank you for your responses.

However, my question is more specific to the language they use in the India specific guide:

When it comes the point of establishing proof of the relationship, all it simply says is:

"If sponsored person is married, submit Marriage certificate"

Now in a previous section, when they wanted the photocopy of the passport, they specifically say

"Photocopies of the first and last page of passport"

If they wanted the photocopy of the marriage certificate, won't they have said something like:

"If sponsored person is married, submit Photocopy of the Marriage certificate"

Pl clarify.

They have clarified for you. Send a photocopy. If you would rather err on the side of caution, by all means send in your original marriage certifcate, but as you yourself stated, they only will ever issue you one, so should you need it later for other things, like changing her identification (passport/drivers license) things of that nature, you will be out of luck because you wont have one.

I have explained you to already that my directions read almost exactly as yours, and I submitted a photocopy of my marriage certificate only. I also had to update some information and again only sent in a photocopy of my marriage certificate. You will also only need to send in a photocopy of your marriage certificated.

I don't think any of us can make it any clearer for you.

Allura71- Thank you so much

Others- Thank you very much

I will submit photocopy and also a notarised copy as well just to be safe.

for NDVO...........everything as a photocopy (notarized ) except pcc and medical..........so don't worry even the marriage certificate can be a photocopy...( in Mumbai or anywhr in india they just give us one original)...notarized :)

Hi Myrah and others,

This raises a new question in my head:

I read on the guide that only if the original of the certificate is in a non- english language, only then the translated photocopy has to be notarised.

Or is it that every photocopy of every document like education certificate, birth certificate, marriage etc, all of them have to be notarised even if the originals of these above said documents are in English

Pl clarify
