Hello all,
I have just finished my 22 years on the British Army and wish to go and work in Canada.
I have 2 children who are Canadian citizens, they are 19 and 16 but my boy does not meet the income requirements to sponsor me as he is still studying.
I can’t get a work visa as I don’t have an offer of work. I wish to reside in Alberta.
Anybody got any advice of what I am supposed to do to get in?

You would need to qualify to immigrate on your own through an economic immigration stream like Express Entry - or alternatively wait a number of years until your son has the income to sponsor you and is selected to submit an application for parent sponsorship. If you want to wait and be sponsored by your son, you'll be looking at a minimum of three years after he finishes school and starts working full time before this will be possible.

If you want to try to qualify through an economic immigration stream on your own, start by looking into the Express Entry program. It's points-based and those with the most points are selected. Right now you need to have 470+ points to be chosen. Your age will work against you and you'll get no benefit for having kids in Canada. You can determine your points here:

https://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/crs-tool.asp

If you are lacking points for Express Entry, you'll need to look into the Provincial programs to see if that will work. Since you want to live in Alberta, that's the program you should focus on;

Thank you for the response I am basically up the creek without a paddle then.

Have you calculated your points yet under Express Entry? How many do you have?

Have you looked into the Alberta PNP programs yet to determine requirements?

What kind of education/qualifications do you have? Assume you were married a a Canadian.

I got married in Canada, was there from 2000-2003 and got married in 2002, came back again in 2004-2007 but was serving with the British Army and Suffield. Got divorced in 2009. I have my level 5 diploma in facilities management and many in catering, advanced food hygiene and management qualifications . I just checked and I come under two sections of skilled workers.

I just answered the questions they asked. I don’t speak French so assume the language test was for English.
