By June 2016
Hi all,
So this is my situation:

Landed in Toronto on July 1, 2011.
Over the last 4 years, I traveled back and forth between Canada and the USA (for school purposes, mainly, as I was enrolled in a US college).
I have accumulated ~450 days in Canada toward the residency requirement.
Will be 5 years on July 1, 2016.
My questions are:

1. What happens if I do not meet the 730 days requirement by then? (I do not plan to leave the country as I am currently employed in Canada, but my spouse is in the USA now and unforeseen circumstances happen.)

2. When do I need to apply for renewal of my PR card?

3. When will I be okay to travel for extended periods of time without compromising my PR status?

1. As long as you remain in Canada and do not leave, you should be ok. Is your spouse also PR?

2. You can apply anytime once you reach 730 days. If you don't leave Canada, you can make it sometime next spring at the earliest and apply then (you can apply up to 6 months before PR card expires as long as you reach the 730 days requirement)

3. Your PR requirement is to be able to make 730 days in Canada in 5 years. If you take too much time away so that you cannot make 730 days by July 1, 2016, then you will be in violation. There is a chance that if you stay outside the country so long that when you try to come back, CBSA officers can decide that you will not be able to make your 730 days before your PR expires and they may report you to CIC to investigate you.

No, my spouse is a US citizen and I am applying to sponsor him to get his Canadian PR. We're still working on the application.

So I have to already have 730 days before I apply for PR renewal? What happens if my PR card expires before I apply to have it renewed? (I think it expires in 2017 though, so I should not have problems)

Well other than having an expired PR card... it would impact you in the sense that if you do not have a visa-exempt passport, you will need a PRTD to fly back to Canada if you travel abroad. And you will definitely want to apply to sponsor with a vaild PR card. You need to provide a copy of your PR card when you apply to sponsor and if the card is expired, that would cause trouble with the application.

If you landed on July 1, 2011, then your PR card should expire roughly 5 years from that date (July 2016).
