It would be impossible to check everything, the problem occurs, if they decide to check your laptop :)

Try and think what the IO will have in his/her mind if they find pirated and or illegal items....

FWIW Filling a HDD doesn't help, they can examine that as well.

If anyone is crazy enough bring p 0 r n 0 g r a p h y to Canada then confiscation of the computer and Hdd's will be the least of your worries.

Hi,

It's more like a random spot check. I hope there is no arrest/fine in case you are using/carrying pirated softwares (though I am fully aware about the consequences of child pornography).

what about if i take only hdds(internal ones) as am planning to buy the laptop from there.
i want to take 3 hdd's(total about 2.5tb) with full of pirated tutorials and softwares.
will they check everything?

Pirated software is copyright theft. The rules are always being reviewed and changed - so the information below may be dated.

"In Canada, the Customs Act permits the CBSA to detain goods that are prohibited, controlled, or regulated by any Act of Parliament. However, there is no legislation that specifically identifies counterfeit or pirated goods themselves as being prohibited, controlled, or regulated."

"In addition to civil remedies that are available under the Copyright and Trademark statutes, Canadian law also contains criminal penalties for certain counterfeiting and piracy offences. The Copyright Act provides criminal penalties for infringement of copyright that include fines of up to $1 million and imprisonment for up to five years. "

It is rare, but yes they can check all of it if they wish, and there are documented cases of confiscation.
But like I said, it does not matter how rarely it happens, if YOU are the one that has been selected :)

IMO bringing in pirate items is not worth it, for so many reasons.

Hi,

Thank you so much once again.

1. $ 1 million fine + upto 5 years in prison (added bonus), really I need to think again about carrying any pirated stuff.

2. By child pornography I mean get ready to face an imminent arrest.

well no worries abt the censored word stuff. . . but yea i got alot of softwares and movies and songs etc . . .

is it worth taking a risk . . . or should one delete all of that?

khair . . . still i guess it doesnt worth dat much trouble . . . better dlt it then to lose my lappi or HDD ::)

well as per under mentioned thread:

no checking while entering canada . . . :)

still dats just a single exmple. 1 cnt conclude frm dat.

Another point to mention, if you decide to visit the USA at some point, be careful - They are far worse to deal with if you take "bad" stuff into their country.

Agreed.

And only asked one question, does that mean everyone gets one question ? I doubt it :)

Bringing items in is a personal choice, but don't expect sympathy from anyone (certainly not CBSA) if you get pulled over for a long discussion.
