Lost national identity card: can a passport be used instead?

Hi,

I recently lost my wallet, including my national identity card.
We live in Canada, and I cannot issue a new one unless I visit my home country (which I don't intend to do anytime soon). I do have my passport though.

Will the CIC insist on seeing a (notarized translation) copy of my NIC, or can I submit a copy of my passport instead?
My national identity number appears on my passport (in addition to my passport number) and my birth certificate.

Your passport is the most important national identity document, CIC won't ask for anything else.
