This woman apparently received a discretionary grant of citizenship on Canada Day after losing her citizenship by failing to retain by age 28:

The article states that Ms. Funk holds no other citizenship. Since Mexico gives citizenship to persons born in Mexican territory regardless of parents' nationality or immigration status, I believe that she possesses Mexican citizenship, even if she doesn't realize it.

Also, for those who took note of Paul Compton's fight for citizenship for his second-generation-born-abroad son, which was in the news a few years ago, there's this:

https://www.insideottawavalley.com/news-story/5958863-smiths-falls-boy-receives-citizenship-after-19-month-fight/

A couple of statements in the article are questionable:

1) "Unfortunately, the couple dutifully filled in the naturalization paperwork for their infant son before raising him in Canada."

The parents would have registered Paul Compton's birth, making him a Canadian citizen. There would have been no naturalization. Why is that called "unfortunate," since without the registration, Paul wouldn't have been a Canadian citizen until 2009? In that case, neither of his children would have inherited Canadian citizenship.

2) "Compton feels last week’s delivery comes from a citizenship application the family sent in mid-August this year under Section 5.4, which considers citizenship requests to alleviate special or unusual hardship."

That's possible, but it seems more likely that the boy's citizenship is the result of him having come to Canada as a PR, and then applying for citizenship as the child of a Canadian citizen.

A lot of people in general take these things lightly and many fail to do proper paperwork at the right time only to realize years later how they errd and made stupid assumptions and mistakes.
Not just for Canada, but any country requires you to do your obligation as far as nationality paperwork, and for your children. Do it on time, do it right and you'll never experience a problem.

All of that requires that you anticipate there might be a problem in the first place.

No sympathy. The child was not stateless and as per the law, not Canadian. He whines and blames everyone else about his wife and kid not having health care when all he needed to do was sponsor them both outland when living in Peru. They could have then come to Canada when the app was approved, they would have had OHIP in 3 months and he could have applied for the child's citizenship right away.

He made the choice to bring his child here and remain here for almost 2 years without health coverage. To me, that is very irresponsible parenting.
