Hey everyone, hoping someone can help me. My girlfriend and I want to get married so my question is do we have to get legally married first before I can sponsor her to start her permanent residency?

Yes. You either need to be married or have lived together for 12 months consecutively.

Okay so we can just get married even if she is not a citizen yet? Would we be able to just go see a Justice Of Peace in a courthouse?

You can, but keep in mind you need to provide proof/documentation of your wedding in the sponsorship application. If you don't have family in attendance, don't really have a ceremony or reception, etc. you have to explain your reasoning for that in the application.

Well our plan was to get married first so we can start the process and then have a ceremony like normal when she is a citizen. So providing proof/documentation for the paperwork would be easy enough. Well I hope it is that easy.

She will become a permanent resident, not a citizen.

Why? That makes little sense.. Citizenship and marriage/ceremony are not in any way linked. You are looking at nearly 4 years AFTER landing before she would be able to become a citizen.

Well it was more of a celebratory kind of thing. We wanted to have our ceremony once everything has been settled.
