It is not sponshorship. Even if you have LMIA you are competing yourself in Express Entry with other people in the pool. Besides that, if it were sponsorship in some way it would be a certain result that you got your permanent residence guaranteed, and LMIA is not guarantee.
LMIA helps you to apply for your permanent residence but that´s it, a requirement you have to fulfill. There are other requirements and the combination of all done well, may get you a permanent residence approval.
Tell your employer to not worry, but if he wants to help you and he wants to help himself, that he goes into LMIA process.
