I made the mistake of laminating my son's certificate. I wanted to make it secure, since it is not a plastic card but rather a piece of paper. I did not see the warning not to laminate it until too late. Apparently there are codes imbedded in the paper, which cannot be read if it is laminated.

Now I want to apply for a SIN, and must first replace the citizenship certificate.

I have a few questions:

1) Even though the certificate was issued only a few months ago, I read the application to mean that I must complete all the information and provide all the documents as if I were applying for the first time. Is this correct?

2) I can submit copies of documents, but it seems that each must be certified, even though CIC should have them all in a file for my son. True, they must be certified? That would be expensive, since I must submit 2 pieces of ID and my son must submit the only piece he has -- his passport.

Thanks for any input.

1. You complete the CT00001, nowhere in the checklist does it say documents must be certified. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/certif.asp
