Hi,

I recently got my permanent residency in Canada but moved out of Canada in Aug -13 . Someone told me if I do not enter Canada within 6 months i will loose my permanent residency ? Is it true ? or its just that for PR renewal i have to complete 730 days out of 1825 days (5 years).

Thanks in advance.

Ok great thanks.

One more question. For example for the first 5 years I stay only 2 years and renew my PR and after that during the second 5 years I stay again 2 years . Can I apply for passport or it that after first 5 years my 2 year stay wont be consider ? Will those days be carried forward for applying for citizenship ?

Yes - the days will carry over. For citizenship, you must live in Canada for three out of four years.

Yes as Scylla stated, you must have 1095 days/ 4years without compromising at any stage in 730 days/ 5yr (any 5yr period).

If you live 3yrs outside + 2yr in Canada + 3yr outside + 2yrs in Canada, you will not qualify for citizenship but would able to maintain residency though.

This is actually a very dangerous application of the residency obligation requirements. If you stay away at any point for 1095 days, you have no contingency for unexpected events occurring. For each day gained after the absence, a day of residence before the absence is last out of the window.

Example. Family crisis occurs. You return home for 3 months to deal with it. There is now no possibility of meeting the residency obligation requirements. You get reported at the Point of Entry. You lose the appeal because you can't really show why an exemption should be allowed. You lose your PR.
