Length of stay for visitors

My parents hold visitor visa. When they entered Canada, the officer stamped their passport but didn't not specify/write the allowed length of stay in the stamp.

I Googled and read that "six month" is the "usual" length. E.g., the Shanghai consulate page: http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/china-chine/visas/shanghai/faq.aspx?lang=eng

Just to re-confirm, if someone entered on Aug 1st, 2014, then the very last day she can be in Canada should be Jan 31st, 2015?

Yes - if nothing was written in their passports in the way of a date, they were allowed in for six months.
