Leaving Canada for a 1+ year after receiving PR.

Hi everyone, I hope someone could clear this out for me.

I'm currently waiting for my medical results, after applying on CEC last yea, so i'm on final stages of receiving the PR. But I might need to leave Canada for a about a year or even more right after I will get my card. Question is - When is the five year time period of which 2 I have to live in Canada starts ? And is it an option to leave right after I get the PR for 1 or 2 years without the risk of losing the PR ?

There is a very good contract work opportunity in Europe for me at this point, if anyone curious why would I want to do it in the first place.

Residency obligations starts as of the day you land as a PR.

As long as you are able to fulful the RO requirements (2 years out of 5 in Canada), then you are safe. So really one could leave for 3 years less a day, and still qualify under RO. Leaving for just 1 or 2 years will be fine.

I have quite a similar situation here except I'm a landed immigrant for almost 38 months now (7 of which I was travelling out of country because of work) and it looks like I'll be spending around 6-months to 1 year in a row out of country because of oil economy in Alberta.

I was wondering will this much time spent away from Canada might have an effect on my my PR status? I might be mistaken, but I think with this new Bill C 25 government wants landed immigrants to spend at least 6 months in country (that means paying income taxes) for every given year in order save their residency? Is this something happening? Would be great to hear back from someone. Cheers.

There are no new rules for PR residency obligation. Just don't spend more than 3 years out of 5 outside Canada, and you will be fine.
