No direct communication. The only issue would be proof that you and your common law will be returning to Canada and plan on relocating there permanently. Given the breakdown of your travel plans it looks like you will be back in Canada and living in Canada full-time before your application is finished processing. There tends to be more interviews when there isn’t a significant relationship history especially in person relationship history or there is perceived benefit from immigration to Canada. If you are a Kiwi and are common law there is a extremely small chance of needing an interview.
Yeah I've lived in Canada for 7 years now, we have been together for 2.5 and have lived together for 1.5. We recently went to NZ for 8 months and are considered common law there (she travelled on a partner work visa). I think our case for a genuine relationship is very strong, it's just the next 8 months of travel that may cause an issue.

I'm very impressed with all the advice so quick in this thread - it sounds like it would be safest to apply outland and hope it is approved before my PGWP expires (I'm assuming I won't have implied status when that expires)

Given all your travel you may need proof that you are intending on settling in Canada permanently. Many citizens living abroad with their partner were landing as PRs and the leaving Canada right away so proof is now required in cases where you are living abroad and will be moving to Canada. In your case you will be only away for part of the sponsorship period but you also recently spent a significant amount of time in NZ so it’s unclear whether you’ll be questioned about living in Canada after getting PR.

Yes I was going to write a letter of explanation with the intentions of Canada being our country of residence for the future. Would there be anything else I could submit?

My unsolicited advice is just to move to NZed. :) Say hi to the Wekas for me.

To answer your question, you are right, you won't have implied status. You would need to apply to change your status to visitor before the PGWP expires. Of course the hope is that the application may be processed quickly.

Once you are back in Canada make sure to update your application with updated address and new lease if you have one and proof of employment in Canada. If you are back in Canada for a few months and have established yourselves then that will likely be sufficient.
