Hello - I was wondering if you all have some advice.....
I am here in Canada from the states living with my boyfriend on a visitor visa (arrived in October) our plan is to get married soon and apply for sponsorship but from what I hear it can take a long time. I know eventually I will need to extend my visitor visa but I would like to know if anyone has been in the same position and was able to leave on a visitor visa and had no issues coming back into Canada? I have asked a lawyer and she says she has heard of people being denied entrance and others not. I would like to go back and visit family but do not want to be denied when coming back.

Thanks so much!

The short answer is that there's never a guarantee you will be allowed back into Canada. If you're American - you should be allowed back in. However it's certainly not 100%.

and us applications don't take a "long time". US applicants with straightforward cases are approved in 6 months. Currently July 2014 applicants are getting approved. the stats listed on the website are misleading and represent "worst case" scenarios for each visa office.

i got multiple entry visa after my spousal application was filed.
no transit visa issues for me, more of not having enough funds to keep visting. ;D

Thanks so much for all the answers!

How do you get a multiple entry visa? I am assuming you can only have that after we are actually married?

A multiple entry visa is for people who are not visa exempt and need a visa to enter Canada as visitors (it has nothing to do with being married or not). Americas are visa exempt and don't need a visa to enter Canada. Even if you had a multiple entry visa, this still doesn't guarantee entry into Canada.
