Hello everyone,

My wife has completed all the sponsorship papers and required documents. Once I receive it all in a week.. my next step is to find a lawyer to review it. I'd like to minimize any mistakes on the sponsorship. From your experiences what is the best step to take from here?

Is that sufficient to have a lawyer review it for one hour?

Don't waste your time and money.

I also agree, don't waste your time and money hiring a lawyer. You can complete the application yourself to the required level. Just take your time with it, and make sure that you double check everything. Alot of lawyers seem to know less about the process than people on this forum, they can give you far better advice :). I also considered a lawyer myself, but after reading this forum I decided to take the plunge and just do it all myself. I spent alot of time filling in the forms and gathering all the required documentation, but I think I did a really thorough job on my own.

If your going to use a lawyer, prepare to spend an unreal amount of money on someone who's just going to google all of your questions!

I suspect that most lawyers have a flat rate for simply reviewing your application (perhaps a couple hundred dollars) and it's probably money well spent IF it makes you more comfortable.

Most people have a certain amount of anxiety AFTER they mail their application, wondering "Did I miss something...did I send too much, or not enough `proof' of our relationship...did I misinterpret a question, etc., but it diminishes over time when we realize that it's probably too late if we did. Once it's gone, it's gone.

Probably the biggest mistake people make is sending an outdated form, so make sure you check the CIC website the day before (or even the morning of) when you actually mail your application.

The bottom line is...if it's worth it for you to make the nominal investment for a review, do it.

Good luck!

Agreed. Most people on this forum know more about the PR process than the lawyers/consultants. I think we should all start a firm!

Take on board as many tips as you can from this website. Then have a friend/family member review your application to make sure you didn't miss anything obvious (i.e. forgot to sign/date a page, you're missing this form, etc.).

As someone already mentioned, lawyers do charge a flat rate for immigration applications and it will cost you roughly $5,000... maybe more depending what city you're in....

It's a waste of money. Follow your checklists thoroughly and read both the sponsor and sponsored person's guides ( have the applicant do so as well) a couple times and if you have questions people here will try to help you, chances are someone has had a similar experience. Here it's free.

Not sure what you're expecting a lawyer to really do for you in just 1 hour. That will be barely enough to time to simply review all the papers are filled in and signatures are all there. There won't be time to actually review the content of your app.

And for just reviewing everything is filled in properly, you don't need a lawyer for that. I found it's a good idea to have any friend or family member do a review of your application just to make sure you haven't left any questions blank or missed a signature accidentally. Since you are the one that has done your own app, you'd be amazed how easy it is for the author to read over the same page a dozen times and miss the same mistake each time. A second set of eyes can help a lot, and it doesn't need to be a lawyer.

Just getting an immigration lawyer or consultant to review your application should not cost $5,000 - that is a normal price for the lawyer to do everything. It might cost $500 or $1,000. Phone a few places and see what they charge. I don't think you need a lawyer for a simple case, but there is no harm in getting one to review your application if it will make you feel more secure.
