Hello there,

I was an international student, now I have foreign worker status in Canada. I recently paid 7400 $ lawyer fee for my LMO. Luckily I have got my LMO approved last month (December). My question is can I claim that lawyer fee in my tax as expense this year?

Please advice.

thnx

You can certainly claim the lawyer fees. But this won't increase your tax refund or reduce the amount of taxes you owe.

I know the CRA website lists examples of expenses that can be claimed and lawyer fees for child support matters, to enable you gain employment, etc are eligible. I wonder whether obtaining a work permit fits this criteria? Do you have a link/source that it says it won't increase your tax refund?

On another note, can one claim the fees paid to a tax accountant to assist you with filing the tax return?
