Landing experience

Just a short one to confirm my landing experience yesterday.

I got my CoPR a couple of months back but due to a planned vacation abroad did not want to land (and already a settled resident on work permit) and risk not getting PR card in time.

I did not want to land on my port of entry due to a 1.5h transfer window and I knew I'd have to clear customs. This led to some concerns about eTA and the like but despite some short interrogations I got through without having to provide proof (like my CoPR). Including getting through customs at Ottawa on my work permit alone.

I then drove from Toronto airport to the Rainbow bridge and after the normal unpleasant experience with TSA and paying $6 for an i-94 despite having my ESTA... spent a couple of hours in New York.

Came back through at 8pm. I told the guy I had my CoPR but he just said "passport first" and then asked me about my status and I again said I had the CoPR. I was with two Canadian citizens (both born outside Canada incidently).

After this, was given a yellow form and my passport and told to park under the canopy and go inside.

This process then took just under 1.5 hours, mainly sitting there waiting and watching as various groups were sent away due to not having a specific line in their paperwork, or let through despite not having a visa. After 1h15m I was called up and asked about proof of work or funds, I had an employment letter and 6 months of my savings account which she took and returned later.

My CoPR had the wrong height and eye colour, this was no issue for them, but despite all the assurances that the Port of Entry would be able to change it they were not able to change it! At least not on the system - the agent did cross it out and write in correct values it on both paper copies so am hoping someone will fix this so I don't have to shrink and remember my wrong eye colour for the rest of my life.

10 mins later I was called up to sign the docs and told that I need to be resident 2/5 years. My PR card should arrive within 2 months (which matches the currently listed 58 days on CIC site).

She said I was now a PR and my CoPR was stapled into my passport next to the work permit which was removed and taken off of me. I've been told (and now have) removed my CoPR from passport to keep safe as apparently I don't need it in there so not sure why it was stapled in!

So it was an extremely long day for me, but a good and fairly straightforward outcome at the end.

I landed today at Rainbow bridge.
Rather than making a whole new post, I'll post it under you.

My experience was pleasant overall.
I parked my car ($5 all day) near falls-view casino, walked beside Duty free store straight to U.S border.
Nobody was waiting in line at U.S border, and there were three officers working.
Even before I finished saying "Flagpole ...", the officier cut me off and say "I KNOW"

He gave me refusal letter, took it to Canadian border.
I was given a yellow sheet there. I entered the side building where all the immigration happen.
Waited about 2 hours total before they called my name.

Male officer didn't ask much, confirmed a few things like:
Did Ontario nominate you?
Are you going to stay in Ontario?
Did you commit any crime...

I offered to show my nomination letters and other docs, but the officer said it's not needed.

The actual process took about 10 minutes and I was outta there.
:D I am as happy as I can be today. Good luck to you all.

Interesting to hear another one. It sounds like the US guards are getting fed up there, I was advised not to flagpole and as it was only $6 to enter did that.

Meant to say, I too was asked about crimes but I don't think there was anything else. Definitely not asked about Ontario but then I've been living here well over 2 years. It sounds like you were resident too, did they ask for your driving license too?

Strange how they wanted PoF from me and not you, maybe I looked poor. I had been up 24 hours and flown 7,500km on three flights by the time I landed :p

Congrats!

Been living here more than 12 years. (currently mid 20.)
I tried to look as tidy as I can today, finished all my sentences with "sir", cuz they like hearing that.

I had all my docs, I mean everything, but they didn't ask for a single doc.

Let's hope that our PR Card arrive soon.
Final, Final step in becoming a full Permanent Resident.

Thanks!

Got my new SIN earlier. Going to take it back later, they got the address wrong. I mean how one can copy 1007 from a driving license onto 107, ugh!

I too hope for PR card soon, post at my apartment is pretty bad.
I'm not planning on flying again until October, and then onto to the US so changing my return wouldn't be quite as bad as somewhere else (United do affordable one way flights), but be nice to have it sooner rather than later.

12 years is a long time! Hopefully when Mr. Harper's bill is overturned you will instantly become eligible for the next step as time served before PR will count at 50% again.

Wow, I have plans to get out of Canada this October as well.
Hope we both get our PR card by then, I mean we should.

Yup, gotta live 4 full years to hold a Canadian citizen unfortunately, otherwise, I would have already applied for Citizenship.
Too bad... :(

But hey, no more of those permits and expiration dates!

I think Citizenship requirement is still at 6 years PR. Hopefully when repealed it'll be 3-4 years, with the 50%. I know it was changed last summer just as a colleague was about to apply. She actually had the paperwork ready to file, wasn't that happy.

Yep no expiration dates and I'm expecting banking will become much better 8)

I'm 99% sure CIC will send my PR card within 4 months. Whether or not it arrives is my concern. I guess I can query it after 60 days.

Hey guys,

Thank you for sharing your experience, and congratulations for becoming a permanent resident.

I too am thinking of going to the Rainbow bridge to do the landing process.

Any tips whatsoever ? :)

Tip in general:
* Wear clean attire
* Wait patiently (watch movie with one earphone in the ear?)
* expect 2~3 hours max wait time
* Sit and wait (there was a guy standing there for an hour, trying to see what Officer was doing on the computer?? Officer came out and said "What are you doing! SIT DOWN"
* Answer precisely, when needed.
* IF you are landing, then CIC approves of you, so don't get nervous. You should be confident.

Agree with all points!

Especially to sit and wait. I was lucky as I had two citizens with me so one got us some water and they could have maintained watch if I'd needed the washroom. Someone else was called while visiting it and they are not happy if you do not respond promptly!
There were some refugees there while I was, one was trying to speed up the process and this did not go down well.

A possible consideration, you are technically in Canada there. But, that doesn't mean your cell phone will agree. So if you decide to watch a movie online you might want to be very sure you aren't roaming on a US carrier.

I'd also recommend you go when it's quiet. A weekend early morning or evening likely best?

Thank you guys.

That is indeed helpful.

Also, what sort of additional documents do I need to carry apart from the COPR and passport ? In your post's, I saw you'll had to show bank statements or employment letters. Is that necessary ?

I would say, as a general rule of thumb:

* Bring everything you've submitted to them
* Above includes to CIC or your Provincial Nominee office.
* If have more recent documents such as bank statements or pay stubs, bring them too

Why?

Better be prepared then, "Oh, I didn't know I should bring that, it's at home."
I cannot find a single reason not to bring more than sufficient documents.

In my case, the officer asked for:
* Administrative refusal paper from the States.
* COPR
* Passport

I did not bring any of the submitted paperwork, though in hindsight I should have just in case. Normally more organized.

You definitely need passport and CoPR and proof of funds/employment letter. If you have a driving license take that, I was explicitly asked for that on entry into the building along with passport/CoPR.
Based on that I'd say if you do NOT have a driving license and have another photo ID or proof of address - take it.

A number of people weren't asked for proof of funds or employment. I was asked if I had either but only after 1.25h waiting. Provided both (6 months statements and letter from employer). 10 mins later was done.
My employment letter stated these things (I also got it as bank letter):

Currently employed by XXX
Employed since XXXX
Current salary
In good standing/Not on probtation
Contact details for any questions
Company headed paper
A REAL signature, NOT scanned and printed - ServiceOntario have rejected a letter signed in the US and printed by me in Canada before. Real ink required
