LANDED..........
Sep 2013
Hi everyone,

I'd like to know if anyone had similar experience or can point me to the right direction in this issue. I am currently in Canada. I hope that i will be completing the landing procedure at Fort Erie by next month, if not earlier.

But there is lot of stuffs that I wanted to bring from my home country. Now the issue is I wont be traveling back to my home. Instead, I thought perhaps my family would ship that stuff to me and I can receive it. Of course, I'd need to have an almost exact detail of the stuff that will be sent and its value.

Is this even possible? While landing at Fort Erie, can i simply tell the officer that my family will be shipping my stuffs, hand them the list + value and then approx. shipping date.

Grateful if anyone can share their insight on this.

Cheers.

This is the best thread I could find.

Hello everyone.

Just wanted to share few info that i got from Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) regarding bringing items from home country. The following points are in case you have some items to bring from home country, and getting the tax-free benefit. If not, pls just ignore this :)

1) If at the time of landing, you have an intention to stay in Canada for at least 12 months or more - you are considered a Settler - you should fill the items Declaration form B4 and hand it to the immigration officer.

2) If your intention is just to complete the Landing process and return back to your job or
you did the landing but left the country again before 12 months,
you will be considered a Non-Settler and you dont have to provide form B4 at this time. You still have the right to submit that form whenever in future you are entering the country for 12months or more. To keep your PR status, you will eventually have to do that at some point to accumulate your 24 months stay for keeping your PR status or 36 month stay to be eligible for Citizenship.

3) Whenver you submit form B4, your items can follow at a later time. There is no deadline to bring the items.

4) Most important is the details on the list. Only items that are reported and listed as goods to follow on the settler’s original B4 are eligible for duty and tax-free importation at a later date. Any items not included on the original B4 will be subject to duties and taxes at the time they are imported.

5) Bringing items lesser than the list will not create any issue.

You can read the regulations for bringing items with you below:
Memorandum D2-2-1, Settlers' Effects - Tariff Item No. 9807.00.00, provides information about the B4 forms for people settling in Canada. It can be found at:
