Will your spouse/sponsor be filing? You may as well even if it's a net zero $ return, there's a line on his/her return that asks for your net income (as calculated by the appropriate line # from you return).

I thought in Canada, each spouse is responsible for his/her taxes. Not like in the US, you can fill a form together?

It's true, but net income carries across. It's necessary to calculate family income, needed to determine eligibility for certain tax credits. Others things are also transferable if so elected to do so.

If you use tax software, you open one file to complete 2 (spousal) tax returns.
