My grandmother just passed away and I need to travel to the us for the funeral but I don't have my PR card yet. how do I go about getting the document I need to get back into Canada? I tried contacted NY and la to get info but I got nothing. the websites don't give me much either.

I will be jn st. Louis so I won't be able visit either office... will this be a problem?

how long does it take to get the document ? will I be able to return to Canada in a week?

I Believe you can get a temporary travel document at the immigration office in the airport in Canada.

try calling cic, or going to your local immigration office, or calling the airport and speak directly to the immigration office.
they will tell you for sure what you need to get it

hmm maybe they mean the local immigration office. I guess they could call that a visa office as well.

try calling the airport and talk to the immigration office in the airport

I had read somewhere...if you travel by road(to and from US) then you donot need PR card to re-enter, only COPR and passport would suffice...though not sure good luck

If you're an American citizen with visa-exempt US passport, you shouldn't need a travel document. Just travel back to Canada as if you're a visitor/tourist. When you get to Canadian immigration, they will have a record of your PR in their computer (you can bring your COPR as proof).

You can't get a PRTD at an airport in Canada nor a CIC in Canada, you have to apply to an overseas visa office.

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply, things have been hectic.

Anyway, I called the CIC. The information they gave me wasn't very helpful, as they couldn't tell me how long it would take to get the travel document or if I had to apply in person, and neither LA or NY actually have phone support. It was frustrating.

I did however called Border Patrol as Montreal-Trudea and they told me that I don't need to worry about the travel document. I just need to make sure that I have my passport, COPR, and SIN and I'll be fine considering my situation. They said that I'll have to go through an interview and get a document saying that allowed me to pass.

Thanks for your help everyone!

My partner traveled without her PR card. When we got back to Canada (Toronto Pearson airport) we just showed her COPR and passport, the immigration officer checked her PR status in the computer, and that was that. Whole process took barely 2 minutes, and no interview required.

But i guess it all depends how lenient or strict of an immigration officer you get, if you need a secondary interview.

It can only be done at a Canadian Embassy or consulate that offers visa services. Nowhere else.
Go to CIC's website and find out there where is the closest one from St. Louis. Some consulates issue the travel document same day.
There are no preferences for funerals or anything of the like. Same treatment for all cases.

Well that's funny considering I talked to an Immigration officer at the airport that I'm going to be landing at and he told me differently.

Maybe it's because I'm visa except that it's not going to be a problem, I don't really know. I think that the fact that COPR isnt' valid for travel is bull, especially since there are only two consulates in the US that deal with Travel Documents, and each of them are impossible to reach promptly.

I know you got your answer(I couldn't of helped anyways). I just thought to say condolences to you and your family.

Take Care
