So here's my story...
I am a U.S. citizen. Came to Canada back in 1984 on a school visa and lived with my grandparents. Graduated high school in 1998 and continued on to college. Student visa expired in 2001. By that time, I had been issued an SIN and started working, because it didn't have an expiration date. I guess you could say I fell through the cracks. In 2004, I gave birth to my daughter, whose father is Canadian. We split before she was born.
Fast forward to 2012, I was laid off from the job I was working at, and had just found out I was pregnant. I moved back to the U.S. so that I could get help from my family.
Now, the father of my 2nd child and I are getting married January 5th 2017. We want to make sure that we are able to live together, in Canada. We know that he would be sponsoring me under family class, but I'm not sure, with my history, if we should bother, or if he should try immigrating to the U.S. My daughter, who is now 12, lives with her father, in Ontario, and I would also like to be able to see her more often. Will any of these things play a factor in my case?

There's nothing stopping you from immigrating to Canada provided you are 100% honest in your application about your immigration history in Canada (including the overstay and illegal work). Provided you are 100% honest, approval shouldn't be an issue.

Just to add to my note above - Canada does not issue automatic bans for overstays (so you're very lucky in that regard).

If you were a Canadian who had overstayed in the US - you would be facing a 10 year re-entry ban. Canada has very different policies in this regard.
