LANDED..........

Hello all. This is my first post here, though I have lurked since we started this process in 2009. I am having a hard time finding the answer to my questions and I can't get through to CIC today so I thought I'd ask here.

I finally have my finalization interview on the 20th. I received my letter asking us to go ahead and pay the RPRF and to make sure to do so before my interview. We paid online yesterday and now I am confused as to whether I have to merely bring a copy of the receipt to my interview like they requested or if I also have to send it somewhere. The wording on the receipt makes it seem like we don't have to but I'm paranoid that we will mess up everything if we don't.

Also once I get the Confirmation of Permanent Residence paper do I need to flagpole to officially land? I have conflicting information about that.

Any other tips about what happens next would be greatly appreciated. I am so glad I am almost done with this process!

Yes bring the receipt of RPRF payment with you to landing.

Yes you can flagpole once you get your COPR papers. In some offices, you can also get your Permanent SIN as well. Others make you wait until you get your PR card first. It depends on what office you are landing at. After you get your COPR, you will want to update your provincial health card to a permanent card instead of a temporary one. Once you have COPR, you can only land cross border to US and back without a PR card. Airlines/buses/boats will not let you board back to Canada unless you are from a visa exempt country.

One other note, make sure the agent at landing is informed of your address so that they have an address to send your PR card in the mail.

Thanks for the reply.

Is my interview considered "landing"? I was told I couldn't get OHIP or a SIN so I have nothing to update or change there. ;) At least something is "easy".

I'm from the States and currently living in Ontario, if that makes any difference in anything. I should have mentioned that in my OP.

Did you apply outland or inland?

If you applied outland, then you can't get OHIP or SIN until you land in Canada from US.

If you applied inland, then you can apply for OHIP after receiving AIP status.

I applied inland and have been in Canada since Sept 2009 on a visitors visa. When we got my son's OHIP once he got his Citizenship(he's American born with dual) they said I couldn't get it until I had PR. Confusion reins.

That is totally false. You can apply for OHIP after you get AIP status and qualify for OHIP coverage 3 months after AIP issued date.

My wife was able to apply for OHIP after getting AIP and get on OHIP coverage 3 months later. Look at the OHIP qualifications. You will see a note: you qualify for OHIP if you show proof of permanent residency qualification from CIC.

You are missing out majorly on the OHIP coverage.

No kidding! I haven't been to the doctor (except for my medical for PR) in four years. Ooh that makes me mad. So do you think I could try and it get it now before my interview? Do they count the 90 days from the qualification letter date?

No. You are quaified to get coverage 90 days after you gotten your AIP. They will use the 90 days after AIP issued date. So if you can provide the AIP paper and it has been 90 days since you would be on OHIP right away.

So I'm clear, is the AIP the letter from CIC stating, "It has been determined that you meet the eligibility requirements to apply for permanent resident status...."? I received that letter on December 18, 2012.

Yes that is the letter. So according to that you should have been on OHIP since March 18, 2013. 6 months ago.

I know what I'll be doing this afternoon, thank you!

BTW is this a paper AIP or email AIP. Some OHIP office won't accept email form since there is no signature/letterhead attached. If you get refused, you would have to write a letter to OHIP review board to get a letter of confirmation that you do indead qualify for OHIP. That what we had to do with my wife's AIP. Wrote to OHIP review board. Got a letter 6 weeks later and then we reapplied.

It didn't matter about the delay in reponse so long as we gotten a confirmation before the 3 month requirement. If you have to write to review boardn you might as well wait til you land as I'm sure you would land within 6-8 weeks.
