Starting PR Card renew application on Jun 09 2025. Online status shows 'Submitted'. There is no application number or confirmation . I raised web query to IRCC and received reply on Aug 2 "

No. You only really `need' a valid PR Card to return to Canada via a commercial carrier (unless you hold a valid U.S. Passport).

Your expired PR Card (or anything that CBSA can use to verify your PR status) is all you need to return to Canada.
