Dear Mr. Sreekumaran,

This is in response to your recent communication regarding Flag Oils, which you believe is a Canadian organization and is offering employment with them in Canada.

Please note that Flag Oils is not registered with the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service, and we have no information about them.

Furthermore, although an organization may display a business address in Canada, this does not necessarily mean that the organization is incorporated under the laws of Canada or that it has substantial economic ties to Canada. Occasionally, organizations operating outside Canada will exaggerate or even invent ties to Canada in order to profit from the excellent reputation that Canadian businesses enjoy internationally.

Although we are unable to provide definitive information about Flag Oils, there are a number of sources of information, both government and private sector, which may assist your assessment of the operations of that organization.

You can confirm whether an organization is incorporated under the federal laws of Canada at www.strategis.ic.gc.ca/epic/site/cd-dgc.nsf/en/h_cs03750e.html or through one of the provincial registrars listed at www.strategis.ic.gc.ca/epic/site/cd-dgc.nsf/en/cs01134e.html. Please note that not all provincial websites have on-line search capability and that some of these sites require payment of a fee.

To obtain information about the business practices of specific organizations we suggest contacting the appropriate Better Business Bureau (BBB) for the region in Canada where the organization appears to have a place of business. The BBB may have information as to whether Flag Oils has been the subject of complaints in the past. The BBB maintains files on incorporated businesses, unincorporated businesses, and partnerships. Their records can include foreign companies that claim to be operating in Canada, even if they are not incorporated or registered in Canada.

If the BBB does not have a report on Flag Oils, it could mean that the organization is new to that region and has not generated any reports—good or bad. If there is no information on file with the BBB, no inference should be drawn as to the company’s legitimacy, since the records of the BBB are not exhaustive. It should also be noted that the BBB is a private non-profit organization, is not part of the Government of Canada and the Government is not responsible for the accuracy or completeness of the information provided by them.

If you wish, you can lodge a complaint about Flag Oils with the BBB in the region in Canada where the organization claims to have a place of business. Information can be found and complaints can be filed on-line by accessing the BBB web site www.ccbbb.ca. or writing to the appropriate BBB on the attached list.

Additional resources that can be used to research potential frauds or scams or to find more background on organizations are listed below.

The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website has information about how you can protect yourself from fraud at https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/protect-fraud.html.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) provides information on identity, advance fee, on-line auction, investment, counterfeit and other frauds and scams: www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/scams-fraudes/index-eng.htm

The Canadian Competition Bureau website provides information on fraud prevention initiatives, investigations and search tools: www.competitionbureau.gc.ca.
