Hello!

I'm an American citizen looking for work in Ontario. Let's say that I was hypothetically offered a job before I applied for a work permit. Is this allowed, or would I have to apply for a work permit before I started looking for work? And how would an LMIA fit into all of this? I'm currently looking for copywriting job, or something similar. Any and all information is appreciated. Thank you!

You need a work permit before you can legally work. You don't need a work permit to LOOK for a job.

To get a work permit, you first need a full time job offer.

If the job falls under NAFTA - then no LMIA is needed to get the work permit.
If the job does not fall under NAFTA - then the employer needs to obtain an approved LMIA before you can apply for a work permit.
