I would like to sponsor my parents under the Parents and Grandparents Program in 2017. My wife would also like to sponsor her parents. I would be co-signing her sponsorship as she is unemployed at the moment. I know that my wife and I will have to send in separate applications for sponsoring our respective parents. However, I have a few questions:

  • Can I co-sign for my wife's sponsorship for her parents, if I am sponsoring my own parents in a separate application?
  • If I can co-sign for my wife's sponsorship for her parents, how will I determine the total number of people for calculating minimum necessary income for sponsoring my parents? Will it be four people (me, my wife, my parents) or six people (me, my wife, my parents, her parents)?

Yes.

Use family size of 6 for everything (assuming you have no kids).

Of course each of you will need to submit a separate lottery entry, and can only sponsor both sets of parents if both of you are lucky enough to get picked. If only 1 of you is chosen from lottery, that is the only set of parents you can sponsor (in which case family size would be 4).

  • Agreed. Your family size will be 6, considering no children or other dependents on you.

No, you are not even close as your 2013 and 2014 incomes are way below the minimum required.
