Typically yes - because your parents are coming for an extended visit and must have a minimum amount of coverage.

To be clear is 1 year of regular travel medical insurance the same cost as 1 year of super visa travel insurance? Do the insurance companies charge anything extra for super visa applicants?

Does the super visa require you to get a specific type of travel insurance or any travel insurance (for say $50,000) for a 1 year period would suffice?

If you are serious about applying for the super visa, then you need to read through the application guide to make sure you understand all of the requirements and don't end up having your application refused due to mistakes on your part.

You can find the application guide here:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/5256ETOC.asp

Here's what the application guide says about insurance:

proof that you have private medical insurance valid for a minimum of one year from a Canadian insurance company and that:
- covers health care, hospitalization and repatriation,
- provides a minimum coverage of $100 000, and
- is valid for each entry to Canada and be available for review by a port of entry officer.
