is re entry visa really needed in crossing US borders?

I joined a tour to Pittsburgh, USA last August 11, 2012. My multiple visa had expired last June but I was allowed at the border to come back. My friends wishes me to go back to US with them, do i really need re entry visa? I am a caregiver and had my open permit last March.

As long as your work permit is valid, and you are only going to the US or St. Pierre et Miquelon, then you will most likely re=admitted without a new TRV.
