I have dual citizenship in US and Canada. I have a citizenship card that was issued when I was infant. I would like to apply for a Canadian passport but I am really worried about sending this document to Canada as it is the only document I have that shows citizenship. My gut says to hold onto it and use my US passport if we decide to go to Canada. I know about the strike going on, so if I apply, I will send it through a different shipping company. Also wondering if it would be better to go to Canada and apply in person. I appreciate any insight, thank you!

Why do you need Canadian passport? Going to some places that visa exempted using the Canadian passport?

You can use the US passport to board the plane and show the card to border officer (i.e. you enter as a Canadian).

Whether you need to get a Canadian passport and how to apply, up to you.

I don't personally recall but check carefully - if you apply by mail I /think/ you would not need to send the original of the citizenship card, but just a copy, in which case no issue.
