Hello,

I am from Iran but I live in Malaysia and I have been accepted for the PhD position in the University of Saskatchewan.

In my online application, I have already declared that I am in a common-law relationship and I have explained in the SOP that I am in common law relationship in Malaysia and my common-law partner cannot follow me at this moment (he is planning to apply for work permit in the middle of 2019).

So, we have decided to marry after I got my study permit and before landing in Canada. We want to marry as in Malaysia, Couples are not allowed to have a shared account and we thought our documents for the common-law may not be very strong.

I would like to know is it possible to marry on student visa? any changes do I need to make to my status ? do I need to apply for marriage visa? Is it possible to change my status once I arrived in Canada? And how can I change my status?

There is nothing that is called marriage visa, there is sponsorship visa and for that one you need to be either PR or Canadian citizen to apply for it.
The only way is to apply for visa separately.

Good luck
Thank you for the replay. May i know what you mean by applying for visa separately?
I just want to know is it okay to marry after i obtain the study permit and before landing in canada ? And any changes do i need to make to my status ?

Hi

Yes, you can marry. You don't need to change your status with IRCC.

Maybe I misunderstood you ,but I thought you both need to live in Canada but if thats the case i don't think you should worry about it now, just wait until you get to Canada and you can change the status.
But why you are asking about that if you don't have the intention to live together in Canada ?

Thank you again for the replay,

We want to live together in Canada but he is planning to join me later on (like 5 months after my stay in Canada) .

So i would like to know, if he can simply apply for the work permit visa with Marriege certificate (plus other documents that can prove that this is a genuine marriage)? without encountering any problems ? as when i applied for the visa, my status was common-law.

Thanks for replaying to my question.
I would like to know ,once he is planning to apply for the work permit with Marriege certificate , he wont encounter any problems ? As the time i applied for the visa , my status was common-law.
