Hello,

My finance and I are planning on getting married soon, and I would like to apply to UBC's physiotherapy graduate program. He is Canadian and I am American. The only thing is you have to be a resident or have a permanent residency card to even apply to this particular program. The application due date is in about 10 months, and I've heard it takes a minimum of 9 months to even hope to receive your card. Is there any way I can accelerate the process because I am a student, or if my spouse sponsors me will that allow me to receive my card faster?

Any advice or knowledge would be extremely helpful, since we are both completely unfamiliar with everything about this!

Thanks so much!

Nope, everyone waits their turn. Once you are married, he submits the sponsorship and you a complete application to Mississauga with the Police reports and proof of medical. See: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/fc.asp The processing time is 48 days for approval/refusal of sponsorship in Mississauga and 80% of complete spousal applications are processed in Buffalo in 11 months. Then you "land". The PR card itself takes 38 business days.
