Is it OK to have the kids included in my wife's passport

Hi,

I am just about to fill in the Initial applications.
I have not got the passports for my wife or kids. I noticed that I need to fill in the passport numbers of all family members in
one of the applications. I have two questions

1. Do I have to get the passports of wife and kids before applying? Can I apply now leaving their passport numbers blank and submit them later on
when they recommend me as suitable for further processing ?

2. Is it ok to include the kids (one is 5 years and the other 2 years) in my wife's passport itself in which case all three would have the same passport number. Is there any advantage in having separate passports for all when it comes to migration (When we get the citizenship etc. )

Eventually the kids will need their own passports for emigration. i.e. before visas are issued.
