Hi All,

I need some guidance on mobile phone usage in Canada....I have read some posts here which describes how the telephone system works in Canada.....some operaters provide a combo offer which inlcudes your mobile connection, landline connection and broadband connections for home....but they also have some deals in which you get the mobile phones along with the connection you buy....

We need to buy mobile phones here in India right now so we thought of buying a phone which we can carry to Canada when we migrate.....will smart phones such as Nokia C7, C6 and E7 will work in Canada if we purchase those in India..?.And will we get good deals from operators if we dont purchase the phones..?

Any rought idea about the cost of using mobile phones will be very helpful.....and last question do we really need one if we are new immigrants and we dont know anyone there......????

Thank you for your suggestions in advance.......

you will need a phone if you want to be contacted by the companies to which you sent applications to. you can check out the websites of most telecom companies and have a look at the mobile phones they are offfering, see if the nokia phone models you mentioned are some of them. if they are, then it will probably work in Canada.

Note only that for some telecom companies you cannot subscribe with them unless you purchase a phone that is locked in on their network.

I think any electronics from India won't work in Canada due to voltage difference. In India it's 220 volts (i guess) and in Canada, they use 110 volts.

Many newer gadgets already have a converter that works with both 110 and 220 V so if that is the case, you just need a travel plug so you can plug it in. It would also be possible for most quadband phones that are made for both the European and N-American market to buy a new charger cable you can plug in directly and is made for the right voltage.

However, as said, there are pros and cons. Having a phone already will limit you to the phone companies that use SIM cards. If you come without a phone, you can pick any company. Then again, the phone itself may be cheaper if you buy in India.
