Is it better for me to go from temp to perm resident?

Hello,

I am 29 years old and am interested in moving to Canada. I have a US passport. I have an advanced degree and have experience as a teacher's assistant. What would be the best way for me to move to Canada? Should I start as a temp resident and then apply for permanent residency? I would be interested in applying for a Ph.D program eventually too. I am just looking at my options.

If you want to apply for permanent residency, then you should read through Canada's various immigration programs in the link below to understand what the requirements are to apply:

US citizen can go to Canada anytime.To work you need work permit.
 
Do you have to have a job offer to get a permit? I am a freelancer entertainer right now in the United States.

I am just trying to find out the best way for me to emigrate.

Yes - you need a job offer to get a work permit - and you also need an approved Labour Market Opinion from the employer before you can apply.
