Hello All,

This query is for my wife.
She is an experienced Mathematics teacher (around 9 years for secondary school) with a Master's Degree in Computer Application(MCA). She does not hold any Teacher Education Degree/certificate like B.Ed.
We are moving to Canada on TRV in Ottawa(ON) and would like to know if she would need to pursue a B.Ed degree or any certification in Canada for teaching in Canadian schools?
If yes, please suggest which courses are an option and if uOttawa or another University offers them?

Thanks in advance.

She needs to obtain a B.Ed if she wants to be able to teach in a public school in Ontario. Private schools will sometimes accept teachers without a B.Ed. However there is a lot of competition for teaching positions in Ontario. So her best option would be to get one if she wishes to teach.

Thanks, Scylla for the response.
Yes, she definitely wants to continue her passion for teaching. Any recommend Uni/college to get admission into? I was also doing some research if she can directly get admission into M.Ed (since she already holds a Master's degree), Is it feasible?

Can you clarify what do you mean by moving to Canada on TRV? She cannot go to school nor work on TRV.

Teaching is a licensed profession so she really needs her B.Ed to teach in Ontario. Don’t know if a M.Ed will allow her to apply for a license University of Ottawa has a program and you can check requirements. It will be competitve and she would not be able to start until September 2022. How can she study on a TRV?

Right. She can take a M.Ed. but even with an M.Ed it doesn’t mean she can be licensed to teach in Ontario without a B.Ed. M.Eds are for those who are looking at administration/policy positions in school boards, government, NGOs etc. You need to check with the Ontario Teacher’s College to see if she can even be licensed without B.Ed and check international requirements too. Also she may need PR or citizenship too.

So she can’t study on an open work permit.
She would need to apply for a study permit. Without permanent status in Canadashe ,ay have difficulty getting accepted and you’ll need to pay international tuition. On a positive note math teachers are usually more in demand than arts and social sciences. STEM and French teachers are the most sought after especially teachers speaking French.
