Is a family of 3 allowed to rent a 1-Bedroom Apartment in Ontario?

  1. I was wondering if you know of any rules restricting a number of people allowed in a specific type of apartment... We are a family of 3 - husband, wife and a 1yr old kid and I was hoping if we will be allowed to just rent a 1-bedroom unit since our kid sleeps with us. I hope someone can enlighten me in this matter. Thanks
  2. This was actually discussed before about a year ago here: http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/is-there-a-link-between-apartment-requirement-and-of-children-t31365.0.html;msg198493#msg198493

And the link I found then still works and still says:

So.. if you were to take that literally, you may share a bedroom with your spouse but your 1 yr. old would be a 3rd person and needs a private bedroom. However, I do not think the police is going door to door checking how many bedrooms you have.

  3. I know a few couples that have more than two people in a bedroom.
You should be aware that many larger rental companies will not allow the rental when there is over occupancy.
  4. Actually, you can check the by-laws of the building.

For example, the by-law of my building in Vancouver BC says:

    maximum of 2 persons for 1 bedroom;
max. 4 people for 1 bedroom + den
  5. Hi,

I have got the same issue.I am planning to land with my family(2+2) in first week of September,if God's will.My younger brother who has also got his PR recently ,also planning to land in the same city with simillar dates as mine,so we are thinking of sharing a 2 bedroom furnished apartment for a month only.So in that case we will be altogether 5 persons,2 kids of less than 18 ,and 3 adults.

So are we allowed by law to live in a 2 bedroom apartment (for one month only).

  6. No - by law 5 people are not allowed to live in a 2 bedroom apartment.
  7. Depends which province. In BC, it is allowed.
  8. Its completely depend on providers and their by-laws of the apartment. Don't worry you would get a suitable apartment soon. :)
  9. Hi there.Anyone from BC who rent in Burnaby/Surrey area.I will move thereat in November with family of 4.I need a 2 bedrooms apartment/condo with affordable rent.I need a place near school, grocery, transportation etc plz. Thanks

  10. Is there any update to this rule?
  11. Although this is a by-law many people don't actually follow it.
  12. What about the rental apartments? Do they follow it?
  13. Many landlords will choose other tenants over 3 people to a bedroom. No I'm sure many don't follow the rules.
  14. Thanks for the update, by 3 people I meant a couple and 18 months old child.
  15. Yes many landlords prefer to rent to a couple or rent a 2 bedroom to a couple and a child because of noise. If you are moving to a city with a low vacancy rate landlords usually want the least amount of tenants per unit for noise and wear and tear.
