Hi all, my friend fainted at work and when she checked her health insurance cover, she realised that she was only covered for the academic year which ended on the 31st of August? Is that a common practice to be only covered during your study period? And is there anything she can do to avoid the exorbitant fees when trying to consult the doctor as they may want to carry some tests which will cost even more money?

Sorry to hear about your friend. Was the insurance through the school? It would depend on what the school and insurance company have specified in the policy which is usually part of the docs your friend would have been able to review. If dealing directly with the insurance company the end date would have been specified. Unfortunately without provincial health care any consults and tests would have to be paid for byher.

Isn't she back for school already? It's mid Sept.

If not, what condition/legal status is she working under? Does she have a work permit? If so, what province is she in now? (some work permit holder can get provincial health coverage)

I think this is an “I got this” post.
